You know that something is right with the world when Steve Jobs is talking about Karma and how it relates to MP3s, then follows it up with a Hunter S. Thompson quote. “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” Of course, it was quoted incorrectly and should have read “The TV business….” I guess a lot of people across the internet misquote this to describe the music, TV, radio, the corporate world, show business, etc. “I don’t know the percentage of the internet that’s valid, do you? Jesus, it’s scary.” –Hunter S. Thompson, Atlantic Monthly, 1997-08-26

Recent Netflix acquisitions:

A few nights ago: One Hour Photo – Robin Williams makes a pretty darn good psycho. For a long time, I did not know whether to fear him or feel sympathetic for him. (I finally decided by the end). It surprised me how good this was. It also surprised at how much he reminds me of American Beauty Man, down the road (even down the the exact car he drives). Did I mention that I am glad to have a digital camera.

Last night: Blade II – I was expecting a bad movie, and boy was I surprised. It surpassed my expectations of bad-osity. Ron Perlman and his misshapen skull; vampires being killed with silver bullets; sunlight from flashlights and flood lamps; formulaic plot; happy-sappy ending. There is horrible, and then there is Blade II.

Tonight: Signs – Based on what I had heard and the first 20 minutes of the movie, I was expecting a lot more God overtones and undertones and the Hand of Jesus saving the day or something. While there was a lot of God talk at the beginning, I was pleasantly surprised by the ending. I was also expecting less visible aliens. Most of the reviews I have heard say that Signs followed the classic horror movies and did not show much, but people’s reactions to stuff. It seems to me that when I see an alien leg as it runs into the cornfield, when I see alien hands reaching under the door, when I see an alien in a blurry Zapruder film walking across a driveway, and when I see a full-frontal alien clutching a boy, that kind if flies in the face of “classic Hitchcock horror.” I was happy that it ended in some serendipitous coincidences that could be explained by your deity of choice or could be explained by coincidence. I do not like the God and the Baby Jesus shoved down my throat. HLAGHLAGHLAHGA. It did have some over-used War of the Worlds elements, but overall it was good. I think Mister Man is learning from his previous mistakes (6th Sense, Unbreakable). Of course, none of this changes the fact that some time this evening I actually need to go to bed and not jump at any random background noise.
