Coolest. Bottle. Ever.

My bottle of Crystal Head Vodka arrived the other day. It’s a new vodka made by Dan Aykroyd, of all people. If you click through to the website, you will be greeted with a woogie-woogie video of him talking about supernatural things, including “the 13 crystal skulls,” before he actually gets into the details of the bottle design and distilling process. I know that Dan Aykroyd is supposed to be into the supernatural and I know that the crystal skulls have recently been popularized by Indiana Jones, but did he actually do any reading on the reality behind them? They’re all frauds that were manufactured recently. Regardless, it’s a nice smooth vodka in an amazingly nice bottle, but inconvenient to obtain. The goth in me wants a dozen more bottles. The realist in me is fine with just the one.

  1. @Scott: The answer to that question lies in whether or not you like vodka. Kim hates it, I love it. If you are going to mix it with something that masks the flavor, almost any vodka will do. When I ordered the bottle, I was half-expecting it to be a fancy expensive bottle filled with rubbing-alcohol-quality vodka. I was pleasantly surprised to find it was of a mid-to-top shelf caliber. I would totally buy some again if I didn’t have to go through the whole internet+$15 in shipping charges+signed by a 21-year-old thing.

  2. I watched the whole video a couple days ago. Wow, that is a serious text from Dan Aykroyd. How is the vodka itself? The bottle is beautiful, and I want one, but would I just be paying for the glass?

  3. @rob: you never know when Blackbeard might show up as a houseguest!

Actually, it’s a kind of green tea in which the whole leaves are rolled up into little gunpowder-like nuggets. They expand nicely in hot water, impart a lot of their flavor, and when mixed 50/50 with mint (and a splash of rosewater), makes a great Moroccan tea!

  4. @ouroboros: The vodka itself is of fairly high quality. It passes “the freezer test”–it’s still quite fluid when left in the freezer, meaning it’s pretty pure. The flavor is not as “sharp” as some vodka. Maybe it’s some kind of taste-bud-placebo effect after watching the video or maybe it’s true, but I do get the feeling that filtering it through those fancy quartz crystals does add some extra flavor subtleties. Not counting shipping, I paid about $55 for it. I’d probably compare it to a $40, possibly $45, bottle. Hopefully that gives you a good idea of the vodka-quality-to-fancy-bottle ratio.
