  1. Danger, Will Robinson:

How much will I be paid? How will I be paid?

You can earn up to $10 for each approved, verified referral you submit. This includes $2 when a business referral is approved by Google; and $8when an approved business verifies that the information you submitted is accurate.

So, $2 when Google gets around to clicking on your submission eventually; $8 when the local business replies to the postcard they get sent (possibly never). I don’t like the sound of that.

Candice did the postcard verification thing when she submitted her own clinic to Google Local — turnaround on the postcard arriving (in Canada, mind you, but still) was over a month. So figure probably 2-3 week turnaround on postcards within the US.

And then the business gets the postcard in the mail and someone there has to go to a URL listed on it and enter a confirmation code, which for many small businesses would mean remembering to take the postcard home and follow the steps even though they didn’t actually decide to pursue a listing on Google Local themselves, which has been available and free for years. And for a large business I can’t imagine what bureaucracy would be involved in confirming the details.

So it’s basically $2/business if you’re lucky. And while you could probably generate decent volume in a local business district, you’re competing against everyone else who did the same district not knowing you were doing it too. And once you start involving travel time and either bus fare or gas things get worse fast.

Sounds like a teenager/stay-at-home mom kind of thing, maybe.

  2. I never said it would be a good job! 🙂 And don’t knock the teenager/stay-at-home-mom level of job. Here in Portland, there are quite a few people that do odd-jobs such as that. They’re called [starving] artists. Also, it sounds like more money than I’ve ever made with Google’s AdSense, although the only “work” I had to do to get that profit was to paste a little JavaScript snippet.
