This morning, when I got up, I clicked on the iPod and started listening to some really-old-school music. The first thing that came on was a pop song that, the DJ explained, swept the nation in June of 1912 called They Gotta' Quit Kickin' My Dog Around. Ordinarily, the date would just strike me as abstractly “really old” or “pretty close to turn of the century,” but it occurred to me that 1912 was the very same year in which Kim's ring was made. That was a connection that totally blew my mind. When the ring was being forged, somebody in the same town was likely listening to an original release of this song on a phonograph.
