Recent finds in Podcasting…

  • The Seanachai, http://goodwordsrightorder.com/ – Remember Joe Frank? This is sort of like that–oddball stories with a definite “weird” bent, done over music with sound effects. I am really not sure I can properly describe it here, so you may just want to listen to the promo on OpenPodcast (MP3, 0m:52s) which includes a 29 second story. As an example, one of the stories starts: “So there’s this vampire. Living in my attic. I mean, it might be some other kind of undead semi-human, but I am pretty sure it’s a vampire…on the skids, just like I am because I live in a tiny, crummy, little house…”
  • EarthCore, http://www.scottsigler.net/earthcore/ – The world’s first podcast-only novel. Once you get past that hype, it turns out that this is is/was a book that came out as an eBook, was a bestseller (on the eBook lists…. are there such things…?) for some time, but then got axed just before going to paperback. The author decided to make an audiobook version and release it, a chapter a week, via podcast. So far, it sounds like your typical old-school Michael Crichton or Dan Brown novel–a bunch of science (in this case, geology), wrapped into an action/adventure story. It is doubtful that this is something I will re-read (or re-listen-to), but for now is a fun little story.
  • Engadget, http://podcasts.engadget.com/ – After Mister Man who originally started this left for O’Reilly’s “Make” magazine, this podcast sort of disappeared. It is finally back now.
