A funny thing happened to me on the way to the factory

On the way to work this morning, I had a strange experience. Some car had been tailing me for a little while, then pulled up along side me, a little bit ahead. The driver rolled down his window and gave a “thumbs-up” sign, probably something to do with the “RM -RF” license place or random assorted stickers (“I [heart] source code,” “separate church and state,” etc.) He then tried to say some more (as we were barreling down the freeway at 80), got a bit frustrated, and wrote his cellphone number in big letters on a piece of paper. Unfortunately, I had no easy way to call at the time, as the fates stacked up several things against me: I forgot to charge the phone last night so the juice was low, plus it was really difficult to get it at the time, plus even if I had been able to get to it and use it, the tiny touch-screen keypad is less than optimum for dialing while driving (it is meant for quick dialing from the address book, so manual dialing is not so wonderful.) Plus, I try to never be one of “those people” who gab away on the phone while driving (although an exception for such an oddball situation would have been made.)

Now, I am left wondering what he wanted. Was it a “mad props to you and your collection of witty sayings” sort of thing? Was it “where did you get that one particular sticker?” (Unamerican, by the way) Was it “I have no idea who you are, but your car seems cool and I want to offer you a job?” Maybe I will never know. Maybe the guy is on LiveJournal and will stumble across this entry and know (or will do a Google search for something-or-other and get the same result.) Either way, I have a meeting to get to in a few minutes and ICMP packet generation code to worry about a bit later…
