So, I rented a made-for-TV version of Alice in Wonderland. It was one of the few movies that ends up being pretty darn faithful to the book–except for the first few minutes. Everything up to Alice falling down the rabbit hole was a complete departure from the book, but I still liked it. They did a sort of Wizard of Oz thing–the various people in the “dream” world also appearing as characters in the “real” world. That was a nice touch.

Anyway, the visual effects were awesome, if a little obviously computer-generated in places. Ben Kingsley makes a pretty good Sgt. Pepper's trippy-ass caterpillar. Although, boy…has he come (fallen?) a long way since Gandhi. Whoopi Goldberg looks really funny with blue skin and whiskers. Martin Short is…. Martin Short. As the Mad Hatter. And, well, the queen from Black Adder was the Queen of Hearts. I can't possibly think of a better match. Just imagine her Queen Elizabeth character constantly screaming at the top of her lungs. Gene Wilder makes a great Mock Turtle. I think now I may need to the the Willy Wonka DVD, though. Christopher Lloyd is excellent, as always. Also, Robbie Coltrane and George Wendt make excellent twins. It took me a while to figure out how I knew The Walrus: Peter Ustinov, a.k.a. Detective Fix from Around The World in 80 Days. The Carpenter was Mr. Kobayashi from The Usual Suspects. The only person I am having a hard time placing is the Duchess. She was the Fat Lady Painting in Harry Potter, but I am sure I have seen her in something else before (but IMDB does not seem to help me on this).

Edit: The Duchess is Aunt Agatha from the latter seasons of Jeeves and Wooster. I didn't scroll past movie roles in IMDB.
