Do not cut it open to find out how it works. It is a standard charcoal filtration system. Charcoal, when used as a filter, is in the form of black and white sand. It will get all over the counters. It will get all over the sink. It will get all over the floor when your drunken butterfingers fumble and let it crash against the linoleum, exploding bits of soggy charcoal mud everywhere.
