Oh, letters! We’ve got letters!

So you send a letter and it is incorrectly addressed and has no return address. What happens? We all know it goes to the dead letter office. Then what? Does it just pile up? Do they shred or burn it after a few years? Of course not! They auction it on eBay! I guess they have been doing this since the early 1900's (well, sans eBay).
