Last week, I posted some statistics and calculations about the sex offender population in the area. I chatted with several people about how it really did not effect me one way or the other. The number was a lot higher than I expected, but did not make me feel any more or less secure. Part of that is the fact that I am male and simply do not worry as much about it. Part of that is that the area does not have any sort of dangerous “feel” to it–it is a generic upper-middle-class suburb. Today, I received the following memo in my mailbox at work. Again, it does not really change how I feel about the area. It is just interesting to note. Does that make me callous?

This is to advise you that PacWest Security Services, our security company for the property, has provided me with a notice from the Newport Beach Department about a recent rape that has occurred at a property located in the 1000 block of Dove.

The Notice reads as follows:

ATTENTION ALL PATROL OFFICERS: Please be advised that sometime during the night on February 4, 2003 on the 1000 block of Dove Street, a suspect attacked and raped a female janitor. The suspect reportedly used a firearm to force the janitor into the restroom where the crime was committed. The suspect is a white male, approximately 5' 10″, 170 pounds, about 21 years of age and last seen wearing a black shirt.

Please be on the look out for any suspect fitting the above description. Further, please pay special attention to the bathroom areas and the areas where the janitor crew may be working. If any officers see any suspects fitting the above description or have any information pertaining to this event, please contact the Newport Police Department at (949) 644-3682.

Tenants, please advise your female personnel. Do not walk to your cars alone in the evening hours. Please be extra cautious when entering or leaving the building and/or entering the restrooms.

For the time being, we have instructed PacWest Security to check all corridors and bathrooms on all floors for added safety.

If you see any person fitting the description noted above in the Notice, please immediately contact the police department. We want everyone to be safe at all times.

Thank you.
